Ramdam mo na ba? Cuz the word for the month of August is… #Gawat — it is an ilocano word which means a period of scarcity. Among the Filipino ‘masa’, especially the Ilocanos, if food and money are scarce, it is ‘gawat’ already.
‘Gawat’ is also a period where Filipino farmers use rice production as the illustration of such economic concept. It often occurs during the rainy season, when planting occurs, and food stocks from the previous harvest are running low. Our farmers wait 3 to 4 months usually without income while waiting for the harvest hence the term ‘gawat’.
